ALTY WEINREB
Alty was raised and educated in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish world, where he extensively studied Rabbinics and Cantorial music. He received Rabbinic ordination from Rabbi Yitzchak Kleiman of the St. Louis Rabbinical College. Alty attended Yeshiva University’s Belz School of Music’s Cantorial Institute and studied Ashkenaz cantorial and Mizrachi Hazzanut Arts with famed Cantor Joseph Malovany and Hazzan Moshe Tessone.
Through Alty’s diverse career, he has been blessed to play and collaborate with three Grammy Award-winning musicians (Frank London—Klezmatics, Marty Beller—They Might Be Giants, and Roberto Rodriguez—Miami Sound Machine), act in a TV commercial with comedy legend Carol Burnett, drum with 20th-century Jewish music giant Shlomo Carlebach, and advise as a NYC theatrical Jewish music consultant.
In 2015, Alty founded and became lead singer/songwriter of the internationally acclaimed Judeo Flamenco group Lyla Cante.
From 2018 - 2021 Alty served as Cantor of Conservative synagogue Shirat Hayam in Swampscott, MA, leading innovative adult and children’s Shabbat and Holiday prayer services, classes, Purim plays, the B’nai Mitzvah program, and the adult and children’s choir. He also composed and arranged new Jewish music.
From 2021- 2024 Alty served as Rabbi & Cantor of Reform Temple of the High Country in Boone, NC. He led inventive and engaging Shabbat and Holiday prayer services and insightful adult education. He also led fun and informative children’s education. His children’s choir was featured in Free Them All, a music video that Alty co-wrote and directed in support of the Israeli hostages. He also composed and arranged new Jewish music.
Alty established successful community-building initiatives like new multi-generational Holocaust Education and Jewish literacy programs, and created outreach programs like “Army of Love” that feed the homeless, and designed the “Interfaith Musical Shabbat” series, that invited local Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Unitarian, Baha'i and Buddhist houses of worship to experience interactive and compelling Shabbat services followed by delicious onegs, fostering unity in the community.
Since 2025 Alty has been cantor and musical director of Conservative Congregation B’nai Sholom-Beth David of Rockville Center, NY.
Alty has breathed new life into these congregations, bringing much warmth, meaning and energy with powerful, spiritual offerings.
With his ability to translate ancient wisdom to modern audiences, Alty Weinreb has helped build communities from every Jewish denomination, bringing them spirit and innovation as a leader and teacher.
